Michiel Frielinks large-scale paintings tell stories of survival and struggle, the human condition influenced by war.
The individual is coping with circumstances no longer under its control.
About Michiel:
Michiel was born in 1979 in the Netherlands.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2011, at the AKI academy of art, Enschede, the Netherlands. He moved to Leipzig in 2014 and is a founding member of Yacht Club Leutzsch artist community.
Michiel about his work:
“I explore the struggle of the individual during and after violent conflict. I’m making the horror of war palpable by reducing it to it’s mundane essentials.
Then I paint it. By using bright pigments I colorize the grey areas between war and peace, making it come alive.
Part of my work as an artist is researching forgotten painting techniques. Together with references to art history I let my work speak from the collective consciousness.”
